From time to time, industrial espionage is brought into focus but, by the very nature of the activity it is impossible to quantify; experts, however, are in agreement that the issue is real and growing.

As a gentle aside, football aficionados will recall the recent disclosure from a device in the England dressing room at the 2012 FIFA World Cup.

A successful business will usually mean that your competitors will want to know how you achieve your success.

With the rapid pace of technological change and innovation, espionage is even more of a potential problem for companies today.

There is no end to what some people will do in order to infiltrate your business, your systems and your staff to obtain sensitive information, which aids you in running your business.

Mobile phones and the internet simply provide the opposition with additional ways to get at your company’s information, helped on by an ever more sophisticated and easily obtainable array of gadgets and devices to enable them to gather information.

For example, an electronic bug can be concealed in an apparently normal mobile phone or in a power cable extension, creating a listening device that is forever powered by mains electricity and able to transmit the user’s two-way conversation Whatever the reasons for your company to be targeted, the simplest and most cost effective way for someone to gather information about you is by the use this technical surveillance i.e. planting “bugs”.

We have successfully investigated several incidents and have identified culprits within organisations who have been responsible for providing a competitor with information.

If you suspect that information is being leaked, and it is thought that there must be a “bug” within your organisation, we can conduct a “bug sweep”; this step would only be taken following a risk assessment with you to determine the best way of tackling the issues you may have.

In 2005, The Institute of Directors (in association with the DTI) published a Directors Guide to Information Security (which can be downloaded here) contains useful information for company management.
